1. Choose a review center that would bring out the best in you. The Lecturers will not be there for you during the board exam, as i quote “Hindi ang mga lecturers ang magaling, dapat kayo kasi kayo ang magtatake ng exam”
2. No overcrowding policies. How can you concentrate in a review if you are seated at the back or already standing? It would be very uncomfortable to you.
3. Programs or style of review must be based on latest technological and developments that would help you more. since we are in the new generation, why would you choose a traditional review composing of “lectures and reading” if you can only gain 20% retention learning on it? Try looking for a higher retention rate for better learning
At the end of the day, it is not the review centers that will ensure your success in the board examination, it is your own perseverance, discipline, and hard work that will determine your success in the quest to become a professional nurses endowed with knowledge, skills and right attitude

MANILA, Philippines — Three of the largest organizations of nurses in the country joined congressmen in assailing the continued government inaction to demands for an end to the volunteer nursing training program allegedly exploited by nearly all private and government medical institutions.

Laguna Rep San Luis said government, through the Departments of Health and of Labor and Employment, has the moral obligation to look into the complaints of majority of the country’s over 280,000 nurses who are forced to do regular nursing jobs in hospitals without getting paid.
Nars ng Bayan president Eleanor M. Nolasco said Health Secretary Enrique Ona should heed their appeal for a halt to this illegal, unethical and exploitative practice at the same time provide employment opportunities for nurses with corresponding professional development and advancement programs.”

"Our nurses want to work and earn a living but they become forced volunteers. The certificates of training given them are not accepted for employment overseas,” complained Dr. Leah Primitiva G. Samaco, president of Ang Nars.

False promises Many of the Philippine recruitment agencies often employing British advisers are flirting with, if not flouting, the law, taking a fat fee for the promise of a job they cannot deliver.

Now, in fact, the UK is losing nurses rather than importing them. Australia is the prime destination, followed by the US, New Zealand and Canada. In 2008, less than 200 Australian nurses registered to work in the UK, whereas more than 6,000 UK-registered nurses had their qualifications validated to move down under.

Philippine Nurses' association seeks moratorium on nursing programs

Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) president Teresita Barcelo estimated that up to 200,000 nurses were jobless as of last year.

“The demand for nurses abroad in the past years had led to the opening of many nursing schools whose students do not even pass the Board exam for nurses. In the end it is the nurses who suffer because there is already an oversupply of nurses in our country,” she lamented.

Some of those who had plans of going to nursing schools may back out because of the oversupply of nurses.
“The oversupply of nurses is to a certain extent a result of the world economy. Past two years there was a downturn in economy. Many went bankrupt. So there’s no more demand. I think our students know what to do,” he said.

Barcelo added that in 2000, there were only 172 nursing schools but this bloated to 491 in 2004.

“There’s already an oversupply of nurses and not much job opportunities. There are so many nurses now who are unemployed. “Our parents spent so much on our education but we could not find a job. Authorities cannot deny the fact that the more schools are being allowed to offer Nursing course, the more they are jeopardizing the skills of new nurses. Many countries are beginning to doubt about the quality of Filipino nurses, as they began to impose stiff requirements.

While their nursing graduate number keeps climbing, few jobs are available. Hospitals have been picky in their hiring of new applicants. Only those who graduated from prestigious schools are prioritized.

This forces some of the new nurses to look for other employment away from their profession. But, unfortunately, majority of them end up jobless, still dependent on their parents.

Fresh graduates are in an awful situation once they graduate. Some hospitals are trying to gain profit from these newly licensed RNs by making them pay for their “training fee” and to “render nursing care services to the hospital”. DOUBLE WHAMMY? I absolutely agree that to be on greener pastures in nursing, you have to start at hell first with minimal chance of going up.

There are about 200,000 unemployed nurses in the Philippines and 40,000 more are expected to be added by June. Preying on the desperation of many nurses to find jobs here or abroad, new types of “businesses,” including but not limited to the now infamous “nursing-training for a fee,” have mushroomed these past few years.

If the Aquino administration is dead serious about addressing this matter, it should create more “plantilla” positions for nurses in our understaffed hospitals, build more rural health and medical centers, and aggressively deploy thousands of tenured health care providers to far-flung communities. All the rhetoric about universal health care and daang matuwid will be empty words unless they are translated into action. from the Philippine Inquirer

Fameronag said the 10,000 nurses being recruited through RN Heals will be deployed to the poorest localities around the country.

Unlike a similar nurse employment program in 2010 that hired nurses for only six months, RN Heals will employ nurses for one year.

“They will get an allowance of P8,000 monthly and an additional P2,000 from the local government unit where they are assigned,” Fameronag said.

They will also have Philhealth medical insurance coverage and group insurance from the Government Service Insurance System.

DoLE will recruit and select the nurses while the Department of Health and the Department of Social Welfare and Development will decide where they would be deployed, he said.

Applicants should be physically and mentally fit, licensed by the Professional Regulation Commission, and preferably be residents of the area where he or she would be deployed.

The government will begin deploying the nurses chosen for the program by Feb. 11, Fameronag said.

CHED “sleeping on the job” related to the less than half of nursing students passing exams says Philippine President Aquino

Newly elected President Aquino did not hide his dismay on the commission’s performance after learning that more than half of the country’s nursing schools posted a record of below the national passing average.

Earlier, Angeles also bared that in a seven-year period (2001 to 2008), the number of flunkers in the Philippine Regulation Commission-administered licensure exams exceeded the number of board passers by as much as 1.42 million, or about 64 percent.

To all of those who are from the Philippines and are planning to get student visa for England, pls dont push it through. To be truthful i have met filipino nurses and were lured by these agencies that they could process their student visas and can find an employer for them. They were asked £2500- 3000 for their placement fees. When they arrived here there were no jobs. They went once a week to university for their NVQ's. Say they arrived in Leeds and the university that they were supposed to attend is in Birmingham. They were in a difficult situation and yet they cant go back to the Philippines because they owed thousands of pounds just to obtain student visas. Their regrets, no one has told them the reality. Why i am telling you filipino nurses not to come over here because i too am a Filipino/british. I am just concern of what will be your plight when you would be here.

It seems as though every girl/boy in the Philippines wants to be a nurse. It makes sense in the fact it would give them the opportunity to make some decent money overseas.

However, from what I've seen from relatives and their friends, this doesn't necessarily seem to be the case. A lot of these nurses go on to become "call-center" agents. From what I understand, there are way too many nurses and not enough internship opportunities for them to get experience in nursing and move abroad. Also a lot of them have trouble finding work after they graduate. Do you think that there are too many nurses in the Philippines?

Yes, They are too many Nurses, but as a Culture, i feel the Filipino family does not think to the future. They only think of the social standing. To be a nurse in a this culture is a big deal. They really dont talk about what the salarys are, how hard it is to find work. The reality of it, seems to evade thier minds. Familys will spend upwards of P 100,000 or more to send someone through nurseing school and get licines. Then the reality is that a R.N might be lucky to get a salary of P 8500 to P 10,000 per month. They are other jobs that does not require such a large school cost and still can make the same salary. So you find many nurseing students going to call centers, and other places. Seems such a waist to pay for all that school just to end up working in a other profession.

Going abroad is the only hope for alot of these nurses. That is also a big cost, and very hard to do sometimes. My wife is a R.N in the Philippines, and when we met, she was making P 9000 a month, barley surviving, to me it was just sad. I would say for young people of the Philippines, dont look so much towards being a nurse, unless you can get with someone who can quarntee you overseas employment. Its really not worth it, if you plan to stay in the Philippines. Do something different. Commications, travel and tourism, office management.

Manila Bulletin February 3, 2010 Dismayed at the result the November nursing board, an official of a nursing association called for a special program that will address the concerns of repeaters and avoid waste of resources of the graduates and their parents.

Only 37,527 of the 94,462 or 39.73 percent examinees passed the nursing board administered by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) in November last year. Of the total board passers, almost 50 percent were first timers while only 26 percent were repeaters.

More Share29 Filipino nurses can now apply for work at the United Arab Emirates online, as a shortage of nurses there has prompted it to set up an online recruitment system for such caregivers.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo recently issued Executive Order 835, directing the Philippine Labor department through the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC) to conduct Special Professional Licensure Board Examinations for qualified OFWs.

A report on UAE-based Khaleej Times said the UAE Ministry of Health now allows applicants to register for entry exams online rather than in person. Although the system allows applicants to register for exams from abroad, the candidate still has to appear to sit for the exam in person. A total of 23,000 nurses and midwives are currently working under the ministry of whom only 25 are men.

“We launched the new registration system on the ministry website six months ago, and we have been getting hundreds of applications everyday," said Dr Fatima Al Rifaee, Director of the Federal Nursing Department in the ministry.

Of the nurses working in UAE, 40 percent are from India, 30 percent Filipinos and the remaining 30 percent are local nurses and those coming from other Arab countries.

Local nurses comprise merely 4-7 per cent.

A UAE national nurse is paid around Dh6,000-7,000 (P77,674 to P90,620), while an expatriate nurse gets Dh4,000-5,000 (P51,783 to P64,729).

International standards require one nurse for every five patients, but UAE hospitals average one nurse for every 10.

Such a trend prompted the Ministry of Health to fuel recruitment from abroad by allowing applicants to register for the entry exams online.

But while the system allows applicants to register for exams from abroad, the candidate still has to appear to sit for the exam in person.

Some 23,000 nurses and midwives are currently working under the ministry of whom only 25 are men.

Recently, the ministry recruited 242 nurses for the school health departments in Dubai and the Northern Emirates on a war footing to manage H1N1 cases in schools.

The online system also aims at reducing burden on the customer service desk at the ministry.

“We had several people enquiring about the exams and the registration process daily," said Abdullah Nuaimi, Section Head of the Registration and Regulation Department at the ministry.

“Introduction of the website has streamlined this procedure," he added.

Candidates can take a suitable appointment online to register for the exams that take place five times a year except for the midwifery exam that is held once a year.

However, Nuaimi registration alone does not make a candidate eligible to sit for the exams.

“We have to verify forms, certificates and licences before the nurses are allowed to appear for the exams," said Nuaimi.

The ministry also holds exams for registered nurses and midwives in English while for practical nurses, the exams are held in both English and Arabic.

Also, the officials said that despite the huge number of nurses getting registered in the UAE, those actually taking up jobs are a few.

“Several countries readily accept UAE-registered nurses, so we are actually a kind of bouncing board," he said.

Low-salary structures, skyrocketing prices of basic commodities and the spiraling cost of housing are some reasons why many nurses opt to leave the UAE and take up jobs in the West.

Philippine PRC Nursing board exam changed to July, December 2010

PRC news release 01/13/2010 MANILA, Philippines – A new schedule of licensure examination for nurses has been announced for the year 2010.

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) on Tuesday announced that the board examination has been moved from June and November to July and December.

“The Board examination will be on July 3 and 4, 2010 and December 12 and 13, 2010,” the PRC said in a press statement.

The change of the schedule is in compliance with the Commission Resolution No. 2009-537 dated November 13, 2009.

The deadline for filing of applications for the July examination will be on April 14 (repeaters), while the deadline for first time examinees is on May 14.

For the December examination, the deadline for filing of applications for repeaters will be on September 8 while the deadline for first timers is November 8.

Via Manila Bulletin Philippines There's good news and there's good news. But first, some not-so-good comparisons.

From 2001 to 2002, a total of 9,000 registered nurses were hired for overseas employment. Since 2003 those numbers have dwindled to 300 a year. This should be seen in the context of local nursing schools graduating 95,000 nurses last year.

In sum, there are today some 200,000 graduates who are not employed, at least not as nurses.

The good news is that the world still needs our nurses. Come Feb. 6, a group representing employers in the UK will be in Manila to interview 150 nurses and observe them for potential employment in UK hospitals, including the one named after Princess Alexandra.

The bad news is that even as our nurses are prized for their skills and caring ways, many of them flunk the tests for their inability to express themselves in English.

The good news is that nurses aren't the only ones being hired. According to a director of Jai-Kin Resources in Quezon City, oil and gas workers are in demand, too. They are cadet engineers trained in the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute - and if the news gets any better, it is that they command salaries of up to US$2,000, with free housing.

More good news. The nurses who will make it to the UK need not worry about placement or recruitment fees, salary deductions and other charges. They won't pay for their plane fare, and the work visa is free. In addition, assures Jai-Kin, their employer will take care of their overseas spending program for the first three months, before they take the UK board exam.

POEA Administrator Jennifer Manalili warned applicants about the deceptive scheme of some training and learning schools. These schools, she said, target mostly nurses, healthcare professionals and students who are required to finish their course in the said school then given promises that their school will facilitate their employment abroad.

Another is the trainee-worker scheme, where workers are recruited and deployed as trainees based on an agreement, even as training and learning schools are not licensed to recruit workers for overseas employment.

Manalili also reminded applicants that UK restricts the charging of any placement to persons seeking employment. She further stressed that all interested jobseekers should ckech the veracity of employment opportunities abroad through the POEA website.

Australia course a boost to local Australia hospitals’ staff

Twenty-two of the nurses are from India, with one from Japan and two from the Philippines, and all are registered nurses in their home country.

The 13-week IRON program will give the students first-hand experience in Australian health care and provide them with accreditation with the Nursing Board of Victoria.

Course co-ordinator Dr Sharon Kendall said once the students have accreditation they’ll be eligible to work anywhere in Australia.

Shortage of nurses in USA but .........

Via Philippine Inquirer: Even with the recession, there is a surge in employment of local nurses in the US as visas for foreign RNs and other health care workers are no longer readily available as they were a few years ago. The fact remains though that, as baby boomers age, the need for health care grows and a shortage of nurses is still projected in the coming years.

With the current immigration system, a severe backlog resulting in “retrogression” halted the issuance of visas for many foreign health care workers to the US.

At present, USA visas are only being issued for foreign RNs whose petitions were filed in 2002.

Unless new visas are added by US Congress, RNs and other health care workers who have already been petitioned will have to wait for many years.

While many Filipino nursing graduates have already passed the board exams and the NCLEX exam, the important consideration for many is the question when they may actually migrate and start working in the US or other countries. Many families invested in the nursing education of their children just to find them unemployed and unable to migrate.

The laws would vary by state. RN (registered nurse is higher paying and has a higher sckill leverl than an LPN (License Nurse Practitioner) This is a good description of LPN roles and how they relate to RN:

If it weren't for licensed practical nurses (LPNs), an already overworked staff of registered nurses and nurse practitioners, would find their days even more stressful. LPNs, called LVNs (licensed vocational nurses) in Texas and California can be thought of as those who provide a very personal level of care to the patient.

While they normally work under the supervision of physicians and RNs, their responsibilities increase as they become more proficient. You'll find LPNs taking vitals, monitoring in and out volumes, turning patients to prevent bedsores, treating and/or dressing wounds, providing enemas and much more.

You'll also see LPNs recording vitals, taking measurements of height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration, giving alcohol rubs, helping patients deal with personal hygiene and providing a friendly face and caring heart as each patient journeys toward recovery.

In the old-time war movies, you'd see wounded soldiers speak of an angel of mercy (meaning a nurse), and while LPNs did not exist in those days; today's LPNs are the ones helping patients on a day-to-day basis, providing the personal care a registered nurse or nurse practitioner might be too busy to provide.

Because state laws vary, you'll find some LPNs administering prescribed medicines, starting IVs, while in other states this may not be part of their job description. Because many patients will finish their convalescence at home, it's often necessary for LPNs to spend time with family members, instructing them in the intricacies of home care for a loved one, providing instructions to family who otherwise might seem overwhelmed. My comment: The Philippine government and the Philippine colleges seem more interested in churning out pieces of paper and making tremendous profits from the students rather than providing a quality education and training the students and helping them find work afterwards in job placement. Is the world realizing this as well?
